Every Home Has a Story to Tell

The existing layout of this Mendota Heights home produced an outdated and unconnected atmosphere. Flow between rooms was interrupted by walls and different floor levels between the sunken living room and dining space and the kitchen and foyer. Gonyea Custom Homes used their transformative remodeling experience to produce and manipulate space throughout the main level. They did this by incorporating unique details that helped to open each individual room and increase movement throughout the entire main level. This included adding flush hardwood floors to bring all rooms to a unified level and creating a unique black accent wall to equalize space throughout the foyer and stairs. The team also incorporated beautiful, yet functional columns around the dining area to keep necessary support within the open room. The existing foyer was open, but didn’t present an effective use of light and balance. The large window by the stairs brought in the most natural light, and it enhanced the staircase instead of the expansive entry.

The entry door was replaced with a large, open window and door to help accentuate the foyer. The added black accent wall frames the staircase, while still letting natural light flow in behind it, producing a balance of light and space.

The existing living room provided a confusing layout, without a designated focal point. The transition from foyer to living room wasted practical space because of the step down into the sunken floor.

By raising the living room floor to be flush with the foyer, the Gonyea Transformations team created space that allowed the great room to extend into a larger area for the family to relax.

Although the outside deck felt wide and open, the existing main level was restricting and ineffective. Every room was confined to its own space, making it hard for the family to entertain within the nearby kitchen, dining, and great room.

The Gonyea Transformations team removed the wall between the kitchen and dining. To keep structural support within an open floorplan, the team incorporated functional columns at four points surrounding the dining area. This added a unique and elegant touch to the new dining space.
