Holiday Decorating Tips to Update Your Tree

Can you believe it’s already that time of year again? If you’re like most of us here at the office, you were itching to decorate even before Thanksgiving began. The days are getting shorter, the weather is getting colder, and many people have taken to get their trees up in time for their Thanksgiving celebrations. Whether you are planning to decorate in the next couple of weeks, or if you’ve already decorated but want to make a few updates, check out 3 of our must-read tips for creating a beautiful Better Homes & Gardens-worthy tree.

1. Switch Up the Base

Traditionally, many of us use a tree skirt at the base of our trees. This year, if you’re looking for a change or updated look, think about using a basket or a crate to disguise the base of your tree. Making this easy change creates a simple, tidy, and fun new look for your tree. You can do this by finding a basket or crate that will fit the base of your tree. A trick to this tip is to cut out the bottom of a basket so the base can still rest on the floor.

If you love this look and want to convert a basket into a tree base, check out this DIY tutorial from In My Own Style Blog here.

2. Pick a Color Scheme

Whether you love the traditional red and green, excited to try whites and silver, or looking to incorporate greens and browns for an earthy tone, picking a color scheme for your tree will help you decide how to decorate. Recently, warm neutrals like browns, beiges, and creams incorporated with pops of golds or blush pinks are trending. One tip to create a beautiful color scheme is to pick one or two neutrals and one accent color that will stand out.

3. Add Variety

To get a beautiful magazine-worthy tree, try incorporating a variety of ornaments. Even though you are sticking to a color palette, try to pick out different sizes, with some small, medium, and large ornaments. Also, within those different sizes, incorporate a variety of shapes, for example, round, square, rectangle, star, snowflake, you name it! One last tip is to add different textures or materials. This could mean incorporating wood, ribbon, glitter, or burlap accents. Have fun and even try something unexpected to really stand out.
